From the highlands of West Sumatra comes one of Indonesia’s most distinctive architectural traditions — the Rumah Gadang, the great house of the Minangkabau people. Its dramatic gonjong roofline, sweeping upwards like buffalo horns, is instantly recognisable. Yet behind its striking architecture lies a deeper story. Traditionally, the Rumah Gadang was a house of family and generations — a place where extended families lived, gathered, celebrated and made important decisions together.
